Pirate Blood

Pirate Blood (Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.)

Pirate Blood is a sequential art adaptation of the original prose story by Edgar Rice Burroughs, developed in collaboration with writer Martin Gately and published by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. as a webcomic series.

In this project, my primary role focused on visual storytelling, character design, and sequential composition. Working from the adapted script, I translated the narrative into the visual language of comics by designing characters, staging scenes, and structuring panels to convey action, atmosphere, and dramatic tension.

Adapting a prose narrative into sequential art required rethinking how information is communicated. Descriptive passages and narration had to be distilled into visual sequences that allow the reader to experience the story through action rather than exposition. This process emphasized the importance of pacing, composition, and staging in guiding the reader through the narrative.

The project explores how classic adventure literature can be reinterpreted through contemporary visual storytelling. It also highlights the collaborative relationship between writer and artist, where narrative structure and visual design work together to shape the reader’s experience.
